Dallas Cowboys rule Jayron Kearse, Connor McGovern out vs. Bengals

While he might get most of the attention, quarterback Dak Prescott was not the only Dallas Cowboys player to go down with an injury on Sunday night. Two other starters — safety Jayron Kearse (knee) and left guard Connor McGovern (ankle) — left the game vs. Tampa Bay with injuries.

During his Monday afternoon press conference, head coach Mike McCarthy gave an update on the two players. Both have already been ruled out for next week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. A huge loss at both positions for the Cowboys.

There will be some reshuffling to do at offensive line for McCarthy with McGovern out. Rookie Tyler Smith was expected to play left guard to begin the season but after an injury to Tyron Smith, he was moved to left tackle. Jason Peters was signed to potentially protect the blindside but he may not be ready to appear in a game yet.

“We’ll see where (Peters) is tomorrow,” McCarthy said via Josh Clark of 105.3 The Fan.

As for Kearse in the secondary, he has been crucial for the Cowboys under defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. There will be a few options to replace him but nonetheless, a gut-wrenching loss for Dallas heading into Week 2.

Adam Schefter provides quarterback options for Dallas Cowboys

With half the season to go until Prescott’s return, ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that Dallas is in a rough position with no real quarterbacks available outside of the organization at this point of the season. If Dallas is not satisfied with Cooper Rush or Will Grier as their starter to keep them competitive, the options in the trade market are limited.

“Cowboys executive Stephen Jones has said the Cowboys will evaluate all quarterback options,” said Schefter. “Well let’s stop and think about that … who is really an option at this time of the year? Jimmy Garoppolo would have to waive his no-trade clause in San Francisco to go to Dallas. Why would he want to waive his no-trade clause to go to a team right now that’s battered on the offensive line, that doesn’t look like it has a lot of wide receiver help — that’s expecting Dak back later in the season. I don’t know that he would do that.

“What other options are there? [Is] there Mason Rudolph in Pittsburgh? The bottom line is, the Dallas Cowboys are stuck with Cooper Rush and Will Grier to try to save their season now that Dak Prescott is going to the sideline [for] roughly two months.”
