WATCH: Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott tag-team bump Ross Chastain for payback
In a wild moment at the Enjoy Illinois 300, rival drivers Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott teamed up to give Ross Chastain a scare on the track. Chastain upset both Hamlin and Elliott from separate incidents earlier in the race, including a bump to Hamlin that sent him multiple laps off the lead and effectively ending his day early.
Elliott took a chance to get revenge by bumping Chastain on his left rear side and sending him up the track. As Chastain recovered and avoided hitting the wall, Hamlin came from behind and purposefully sideswiped Chastain as he attempted to move back down the track — giving both drivers a chance to let Chastain know how they felt.
Hamlin and Elliott team up on Chastain
Chastain first got under Hamlin’s skin after a bump to Hamlin’s bumper on Lap 64 after spending multiple laps behind the No. 11 car. Hamlin was sent into the wall, causing heavy damage and effectively ruining his chances of competing for a win. Hamlin’s pit crew was able to keep his car on the track however, setting up a chance to be a pest for Chastain the rest of the race.
Twice more during the race before the above video, Hamlin deliberately blocked Chastain on the track and forcing him into awkward passes as he lapped Hamlin.

Then, after a restart on Lap 101, Chastain bumped Elliott in similar fashion and caused multiple cars to get involved this time. While all cars were able to continue racing, Elliott was upset at the aggressive driving and took his chance to get revenge quickly. The following race restart saw Elliott bump Chastain in the same spot, setting up his unlikely tag team partner in Hamlin for the follow-up bump.
Critics of both Hamlin and Chastain were quick to take sides in the feud, with people pointing out that Hamlin wasn’t racing for a win at that point and was simply causing more drama. Defenders of Hamlin pointed out that his vehicle was race-legal still and that nothing he did was dangerous or as damaging as what Chastain did to him early on.
After the race, Chastain was asked about what happened and he indicated that he was sorry for making mistakes on the track that caused the incidents. He stated that he would have a conversation with both drivers and apologize to them.
