Devonte Wyatt knows a thing or two about being a top-ranked defense. He was a huge part of Georgia’s unit this past year which helped lead the Bulldogs to their first national championship in 40 years.

That’s why his bold declaration was interesting during his introductory call after the 2022 NFL Draft.

Wyatt went to the Green Bay Packers as the No. 28 overall pick, joining fellow former Bulldog Quay Walker, who was the Packers’ pick at No. 22 overall. Those two helped anchor the Georgia defense that ranked No. 1 in the country last year, and Wyatt said the current unit — along with the newcomers — could make the Packers just as dangerous as Georgia was.

“You’ve got a lot of older guys with a lot of great, young talent coming in,” Wyatt said. “For us to come in and be with the older guys, I feel like we might be the No. 1 defense this year.”

Devonte Wyatt on playing with talented first-rounders at Georgia: ‘It’s just amazing’

The Georgia Bulldogs had a very successful night at the 2022 NFL Draft, setting a new draft record with five defensive players taken in the first round. That broke a previous record held by Florida State and Miami, who had four in 2006 and 2004, respectively.

Travon Walker was the first Georgia player off the board, as he was the No. 1 overall pick by the Jaguars. Jordan Davis then went No. 13 to the Eagles, and Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt went to the Packers at No. 22 and No. 28 overall. Lewis Cine rounded out the first round, going No. 32 overall to the Vikings.

Following the draft, Wyatt opened up on what that kind of success meant for their fellow Georgia stars.

“I mean to be honest, it was fun to me just to watch all your guys make plays,” Wyatt said. “Playing with that many people with Jordan, Travon, Quay, Lewis, Nakobe, it’s just amazing because you’ve never seen that much talent on one team, or definitely on a defense.”
