WATCH: Jahmyr Gibbs runs blazing 40-yard dash time improving significantly on first attempt
On Sunday, the running backs to the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis at the 2023 NFL Combine, getting their chance to show off their skills and improve their draft stock ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.
One of those backs was former Alabama Crimson Tide ballcarrier Jahmyr Gibbs, who last season proved himself to be one of the most versatile players out of the backfield in the country.
Gibbs showed off plenty of speed on plenty of occasions during his one season with the Crimson Tide, but officially got to show just how fast he was at the combine. Gibbs did not disappoint, clocking an unofficial 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the combine, putting his blazing speed on display in front of NFL coaches, scouts, and general managers.
Gibbs ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash in his first attempt, which would have been the fourth fastest time of the day among running backs. But he took his speed up a notch in his second attempt, finishing with the second fastest time of the day for a running back only behind Texas A&M‘s Devon Achane, who clocked a blazing 4.32-second 40-yard dash time.
After two impressive seasons at Georgia Tech, Gibbs transferred to Alabama in the 2022 offseason. He did it all for the Crimson Tide leading the team with 926 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, while also leading Alabama in receptions with 44, adding 444 receiving yards and three touchdown grabs to his stat line.
He was even a force in the return game, racking up 258 kickoff return yards on 13 attempts. He’s a Swiss army knife of an offensive player, and it will definitely be interesting to see where he lands in the 2023 NFL Draft, which starts on Thursday, April 27 in Kansas City, Missouri.
WATCH: LaDainian Tomlinson compares Jahymr Gibbs to legendary running back
While the running back position doesn’t usually earn a premium from NFL teams during the NFL Draft, there’s at least one player a legendary running back believes could flip the script on that front.

LaDainain Tomlinson said as much on the NFL Network when discussing Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
“This guy has speed to burn,” Tomlinson said. “If he gets to the Combine and he runs like a 4.2, look out, he might rocket up the draft boards, much like a guy like Chris Johnson did many years ago.
While Tomlinson is obviously high on Gibbs speed, there’s also plenty else the talented Alabama back is capable of. He’s certainly not just a one-trick pony to the legendary running back.
Tomlinson provided his full evaluation.
“A guy that I’m looking at is Jahmyr Gibbs, the guy from Alabama who actually started at Georgia Tech and transferred to Alabama,” he said. “You look at this guy and I mean he is quick as all get-out. Very explosive in short-area spaces, can catch the ball out the backfield.”
