In a terrible moment for Tarik Cohen as he attempts to return from knee injury, he has now suffered a torn Achilles while working out. Cohen has struggled to return to the playing field after a series of injuries that have caused him to only appear in three games since the 2020 season began.

Tarik Cohen suffers Achilles tear

Cohen was released by the Chicago Bears earlier this year and was attempting to make an NFL roster after recovering from a season ending knee injury last year. During a workout video streamed on Instagram live, Cohen’s Achilles tendon could be heard snapping during a drill, and the running back grabbed at his leg immediately while on the ground.

Shortly afterwards, an MRI revealed the extent of the injury was indeed a ruptured Achilles tendon.

“Former Bears running back Tarik Cohen, who was working his way back from injury for a comeback, tore his Achilles while working out today, source said following the MRI. A brutal reality,” detailed NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Cohen exploded onto the NFL scene as a rookie for Chicago in 2017 as an all-purpose player, and earned All-Pro honors in his second season as a punt returner. The Bears used him as a kick returner, backfield receiver and rushing threat — until injuries derailed his early career. The 26-year-old running back from North Carolina A&T was poised to make a return this year, but will likely be out until 2023 with this newest setback.

The Bears selected Cohen in the 2017 NFL Draft with the 119th overall pick in the fourth round — and his emergence made him one of the best selections of the draft. Cohen won the Deacon Jones Trophy in 2016, while setting school records for career rushing and total touchdowns at North Carolina A&M. He also broke the single-season touchdown record for rushing and total touchdowns his senior year.
