Former Clemson star Sammy Watkins set for free agent visit with NFL contender
Sammy Watkins could have his next team lined up. On Thursday, the former Clemson star wide receiver and NFL first round selection is in Green Bay, taking a free agent visit with the Packers.
“The #Packers are hosting WR Sammy Watkins on a visit today, sources say,” tweeted NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. “No deal as of now but stay tuned.”
After beginning his career with the Buffalo Bills, Watkins has been a member of some tremendous squads. His biggest accomplishment remains helping the Kansas City Chiefs find victory in Super Bowl LIV. Since, he spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens, providing an outlet for star quarterback Lamar Jackson.
The Packers are in dire need of wide receiver help, as the franchise shipped Davante Adams to Las Vegas. While the team could look for help in the draft, Watkins would provide some much-needed depth, as Green Bay also lost Maquez Valdes—Scantling to free agency this offseason.
As Sammy Watkins looks to continue his NFL career and the Packers look to fill some holes, the duo could be a match. A deal in Green Bay for the former Clemson star wide receiver could be worked up in quick fashion.
2022 NFL Draft: Mel Kiper has Green Bay Packers drafting surprise first-round weapon
Moreover, Mel Kiper believes the Packers will get Aaron Rodgers a bonafide weapon at wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft. When Green Bay traded star wide receiver Davante Adams to Las Vegas, Packers fans immediately had their minds go to Ohio State or Alabama, watching tape on some of their talented wide receivers.

Well, Kiper’s went to North Dakota State. In ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s NFL Mock Draft 4.0 special, the draft guru explained why North Dakota State wide receiver Christian Watson would look good continuing to wear green and yellow.
“Christian Watson to Green Bay,” started Kiper. “Here’s a kid out of North Dakota State — I scouted his father back in 1993, a safety coming out of Howard. Christian Watson can go get the deep ball. Tracks that deep ball phenomenally well. He’s got the length, the catch radius. He’s got all the things you want for Aaron Rodgers. A rookie who can compete, coming out of North Dakota State. What he did at the Senior Bowl, averaged over 20 yards a catch in his career. Christian Watson. Then, you get a guy like Alec Pierce, who’s maybe a Jordy Nelson-type in round two. Get a couple receivers here to the Packers to help out Aaron Rodgers.”
Last season, Watson broke out in a big way for the Bison. The star wide receiver accumulated 43 receptions for 800 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. With Rodgers throwing him the football, he could be even better at the next level.
Whether it’s Christian Watson or another wide receiver, it’s evident the Packers need to get Aaron Rodgers another wide receiver. Time will tell if they turn to North Dakota State like Mel Kiper is predicting, or if Green Bay looks elsewhere.
