Former Saints coach Sean Payton discusses potential career shift in 2022

Now that he’s retired after a long run serving as the New Orleans Saints’ head coach, Sean Payton is weighing his options on what’s next for him in his professional career.

While many former coaches and players get into the broadcasting business as analysts following their careers in the sport, Payton is also considering taking that route. According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, Payton has an interest in getting into the TV business.

“I’d like to try TV,” Payton said. “I’ve had some opportunities. I talked to Drew [Brees] about it a little bit last night. I don’t know that part of it that well, but that would be something that would interest me.”

While Payton has expressed his interest in getting into broadcasting, Garafolo noted that Payton “keeps saying he hasn’t had any conversations with networks yet.”

Payton, 58, served as the Saints’ head coach from 2006-2021 – compiling a 152-89 overall record in his 15 seasons. He captured the Super Bowl in 2009.

The NFL coaching carousel has been very busy this offseason, and it does not appear to be done just yet. According to multiple reports, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has decided to retire. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Payton has informed the Saints of his decision.

“Sources: Sean Payton has informed the #Saints that he’s stepping away,” Rapoport tweeted.

Payton, 58, has been the Saints head coach since 2006. In his head coaching career, he coached to a 152-89 regular season record. He also went 9-8 in the playoffs. The Saints won the Super Bowl in 2009 under Payton after a 13-3 regular season. New Orleans reached the playoffs nine times in Payton’s tenure. He was the 2006 AP Coach of the Year.

ESPN reporter Mike Triplett also reported that Sean Payton is stepping away, with official news expected to follow later on Tuesday.

“I can confirm via source that Sean Payton is stepping away from coaching,” Triplett said. “Press conference expected this afternoon.”
