Former Ohio State LB Chris Spielman to be inducted into Detroit Lions ring of honor
The Detroit Lions announced on Thursday that linebacker Chris Spielman was being inducted into the team’s ring of honor. Spielman played eight years in Detroit after a successful three year collegiate career at Ohio State.
At Ohio State, Spielman was a two time consensus All-American in 1986 and 1987. He was also a finalist for the 1987 Vince Lombardi Award. The Lions selected Spielman with the 29th overall pick in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft.
Lions, Spielman on the honor
In his NFL career, Spielman had 1,363 tackles, 10.5 sacks, six interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, and 19 fumble recoveries. One fumble recovery went for a touchdown.
Lions team president and CEO Rod Wood is excited to have Spielman joining the team’s ring of honor, which they call the Pride of the Lions.

“The Detroit Lions could not be prouder of Chris Spielman’s accomplishments on the field and in the community,” Wood said. “He was pivotal to the success the team enjoyed during his time as a player. His induction into the Pride of the Lions cements his place in our history. We are thrilled Chris has rejoined the organization as a key member to build the future and we are proud to present him with the highest individual honor we can give to a Lions Legend.”
Spielman becomes the 19th player to be inducted into the Pride of the Lions.
“Anytime you are recognized for an individual award, as a part of a team-oriented pursuit, your immediate thoughts go to your family, teammates, coaches and all of the people in the organization,” Spielman said. “My time as a player was defined by these great relationships I forged. And I realize that they are the biggest reason for any success I may have had. It truly was an honor to represent Lions fans around the world, the city of Detroit and every Lions player past, present and future for eight great seasons. I was and always will be a part of One Pride.”
