WATCH: Former Oregon star Justin Herbert addresses offseason muscle gain

After a standout career at Oregon, Justin Herbert has burst onto the scene for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL. But he’s showing off a new physique ahead of the 2022 campaign, and that could make him an even bigger threat under center.

Herbert is bulking up for this coming season, now weighing 245 pounds — up from 237 pounds last season. During a press conference this week, he addressed his muscle gain and why he decided to put on some muscle.

“Just lifting,” Herbert said. “We’ve just been getting after it. Thankful to Jonathan Brooks, who’s been leading the charge.”

Herbert is preparing for his third season in the league after starring at Oregon from 2016 to 2019. He threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns last season to help lead Los Angeles to a 9-8 record, just missing out on the playoffs. But this year, he’s bulking up to try and help the new-look Chargers to the postseason.

The Chargers selected Herbert No. 6 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft after he put together an impressive career at Oregon. As a senior in 2019, he threw for 3,471 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead the Ducks to a 12-2 overall record and a Rose Bowl appearance, where he won MVP.

Los Angeles had a busy offseason, notably adding star pass rusher Khalil Mack to its defense in a trade with the Chicago Bears and signing former New England Patriots cornerback JC Jackson to a massive five-year, $82.5 million deal in free agency.

Then, in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Chargers bolstered their offensive line by selecting former Boston College standout Zion Johnson as the No. 17 overall pick. Johnson’s addition will help give Herbert some protection as he gets ready to lead Brandon Staley’s team once again.
