What do you call the son of a rocket? NASA may have a better answer for that one, but the son of The Rocket, Roger Clemens, could be in for a memorable day.

According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, the Detroit Tigers are calling up Clemens’ son — former Texas star Kody Clemens — for their Monday showdown with the Minnesota Twins. On the team’s lineup card, Clemens is listed as a bat off the bench for the Tigers.

“Tigers are calling up Kody Clemens from Triple-A Toledo, as evidenced by lineup card,” tweeted Beck. “It’ll be his MLB debut if he gets into game.”

While Kody Clemens isn’t a pitcher like his father, he’s hoping to live up to the lofty expectations his last name will bring.

To illustrate, Roger Clemens began his college career pitching for San Jacinto College North, but he’s forever remembered as one of the greatest players in Texas history. After transferring to the university, Clemens led the Longhorns to a victory in the 1983 College World Series.

After accumulating a record of 25-7 in his time, Clemens became the first first player to have his baseball uniform number retired at Texas. In fact, Clemens was so good they renamed an award after him in 2004 — the Roger Clemens Award, given to the best pitcher in the nation.

After a long career in the MLB, Clemens even returned home to Texas to pitch for the Houston Astros. With the Astros, he won a Cy Young award, and brought them to the World Series.

As for Kody Clemens, the left-handed bat broke out while playing for the Longhorns, like his father. Afterwards, he was drafted by the Tigers No. 79 overall during the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft. After spending some time honing his craft in the minor leagues, the Tigers believe Clemens is ready for his chance.

Currently, the Tigers are 11 games behind the Twins in the AL Central. Still, it’s a marathon in baseball — there’s plenty of time to make some ground on their rivals. What better way to start than by bringing a rocket to town?

Whether Kody Clemens makes his debut on Monday or later this week, it’s an exciting time for the Detroit Tigers.
