Packers announced as participant in 2022 NFL international games

On Monday morning, the NFL announced some of the teams that will be participating in the 2022 international games. Among the teams listed? The Green Bay Packers. The Packers will be part of one of the three games taking place in London during the 2022 season.

In addition to the Packers, the other two teams that have been announced for the London games are the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play in the Munich game, and the Arizona Cardinals will play in the Mexico game. The remaining teams in the international games will be announced at a later date.

Since 2007, the NFL has been playing games internationally. The first matchup was between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. The Packers are currently the only team that has never played a regular season game in the NFL International series. That will be changing this season.

When the NFL expanded the schedule to 17 games this past season, it was also determined that some of the teams that were eligible for a ninth home game in the regular season would play in the international series. The Packers are one of those teams, and will now be heading to London at some point during the 2022 season.

Green Bay has played in international games before, though they came in the preseason. They played against the Raiders in Canada in the 2019 preseason.

Packers comments on the London game

The Packers are excited to be heading to London, and it has been something in the works for a while now, per Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy.

“This is something the league office has been talking to us for a long time about. We were the last team to play a game internationally,” Murphy told packers.com’s Larry McCarren. “The fans there are really going to relate well to the Packers organization. It’s a great opportunity for NFL fans in Europe to become more familiar with the Packers and be more likely to come to Lambeau for a game in the future.”

The Packers say that fans in London have wanted the team to play internationally for a while, and the organization is glad to finally be heading overseas.

“We’re very excited,” Murphy said. “This is something I’ve heard from so many of our fans over the years, particularly those in Europe and particularly in London, ‘When are you gonna come? When are you gonna come?’ We’re really excited to be playing in London.

“Not only will our fans in Europe be excited about it, I’ve also heard from a lot of fans here in the States and certainly here in Wisconsin looking forward to seeing us play a game in London.”
