The Green Bay Packers officially announced the signing of former Notre Dame and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith on Thursday.

In a corresponding move, the Packers placed linebacker Chauncey Rivers on injured reserve, Rivers suffered a potentially significant non-contact injury during Wednesday’s practice.

Smith will wear No. 9 for the Packers, the team announced. Kicker JJ Molson switched his number to No. 11.

After Smith’s surprising release from the Cowboys on Wednesday, teams and fans around the league had been awaiting news about where the former Notre Dame would continue his career. The Packers emerged as a favorite destination for Smith as they gain a veteran linebacker and beloved locker room presence.

Green Bay’s inside linebacker depth is shallow behind starters De’Vondre Campbell and Krys Barnes. Campbell has been effective in his first season with the Packers, leading the team with 40 tackles. For the Packers, Jaylon Smith serves as a low-risk move that could pay off if Smith can push to start alongside Campbell. Worst case, Smith will serve as a rotational player behind Campbell and Barnes, and provide valuable leadership in the locker room. Barnes notably was out last week with a concussion he suffered against the 49ers and returned as a full participant to practice on Wednesday.

In his career, Jaylon Smith has recorded 516 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and two interceptions. Still just 26, Smith was a Pro Bowl selection in 2019.

The Cowboys decision to release Smith came after failed attempts to secure a trade for the former Pro Bowler. NFL Network’s Jane Slater confirmed that the reason for his release was because the Cowboys felt their depth at linebacker and the improved play of younger players at the position made Smith’s role in the defense less important.

Smith’s contract with Dallas still had five years and $50.75 million left on his deal. By releasing Smith, the Cowboys gained $16.6 million in dead cap spending.

The move will save the Cowboys nothing in this season, but it does free up about $5 million in cap space for the 2022 season.
