Green Bay Packers receive injury diagnosis on Elgton Jenkins

The Green Bay Packers just received some tough news. Offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins, who went down with a non-contact knee injury on Sunday, has suffered a torn ACL according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jenkins will miss the remainder of the season. The injury is to Jenkins’ left knee. He was sliding to his left while trying to block Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith, and Jenkins went down immediately following the play. The Packers initially feared a torn ACL, and those fears have now become a reality.

The blow is another tough one for the Packers offense. Running back Aaron Jones suffered a knee injury last week and he will miss multiple weeks. Jenkins had been playing left tackle for the Packers while David Bakhtiari has worked his way back from a torn ACL of his own. Bakhtiari is nearing a return after he was recently activated to return from injured reserve.

Bakhtiari is a star on the offensive line, so his loss has certainly been felt. But Jenkins is a very capable offensive lineman for the Packers.

The Packers are very high on Jenkins

Replacing a player of Bakhtiari is difficult, especially at one of the most important positions in football – left tackle. The former fourth round NFL Draft pick has started 118 games in his eight season career. Bakhtiari is a three-time pro bowler and was a first-team All-Pro in 2018 and 2020.

Despite losing Bakhtiari, the Packers were comfortable with their offensive line due to having Jenkins. Jenkins has played multiple positions on the offensive line, and Green Bay was comfortable with the former Mississippi State product playing left tackle entering the season.

“The Packers raved all summer about Elgton Jenkins,” NFL Network’s Albert Breer said before the season. “They honestly believe he might be the best lineman in football right now. And talking to other teams, he hardly looked out of place at left tackle. So the experiment in moving Jenkins out there now becomes real.”

The Packers lost to the Vikings on Sunday. Green Bay is now 8-3 on the season, leading the NFC North.
