Green Bay Packers sign Micah Abernathy and Dexter Williams on Wednesday

The Green Bay Packers have announced a series of roster moves on Wednesday. As the Packers gear up for the start of the preseason, fans can expect a flurry of moves as they try to balance their roster and fill the holes needed in preparation for the regular season.

According to Green Bay’s most recent transaction report, the team has signed safety Micah Abernathy and running back Dexter Williams.

Abernathy went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft but signed with the Minnesota Vikings shortly after. Since then, he has also played for the Tampa Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. Abernathy also played in the XFL with the Dallas Renegades in 2020 and the USFL with the Houston Gamblers in 2022.

Williams is more familiar with the Packers as he was their sixth-round pick in the 2019 draft. He remained with Green Bay up until the start of the 2021 season when he and the team elected to part ways. Williams spent the majority of his time in Green Bay as a member of their practice squad but was on the main roster for seven games over the three-year span. Since then, he has played for the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Miami Dolphins. He also played for the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL in 2022.

The signing of these two individuals means that two more were released in unison, making room for them. The unfortunate individuals were wide receiver Osirus Mitchell and long snapper Steven Wirtel.

Green Bay lineman Jon Runyan weighs in on impressive 2021 feat, repeating success

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Jon Runyan recently learned from his father, Jon Runyan Sr., that he didn’t give up a penalty during the 2021 season. The feat made him one of four linemen in the league to play 800+ snaps without a flag last year.

However impressive the stat is, Runyan says he hardly thought about it as the year went on.

“It wasn’t something I really thought about,” Runyan told Packers.com. “I was just trying to play ball. There definitely were some questionable times I could have gotten called for the flag. Sometimes it’s just luck that breaks your way.”

Runyan made his first start at left guard last season, which was just his second year in the league. The Packers drafted him with the No. 192 overall pick out of Michigan in 2020.

In his interview, the former Wolverine was quick to point out that he actually got away with a penalty early in the year versus Cincinnati.

“The guy beat me inside, and I held him,” Runyan admitted. “He threw me off but then at the last second he stuck his leg out and tripped (Dillon) up the middle. It was definitely a flag on me, but they saw the tripping and that kind of overruled it and they threw the flag on him. That was probably my closest call.

“I lucked out on that one.”
