Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio provides incredible update on John Metchie's recovery after cancer treatment
After the Houston Texans selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, former Alabama star John Metchie missed his rookie season as he underwent treatment for leukemia. Based on general manager Nick Caserio’s comments Wednesday, Metchie could join the Texans in time for the offseason program.
Caserios joined SportsRadio 610 on Wednesday and provided an incredible update on Metchie’s recovery, saying he’s doing well and could be back with his teammates soon.
“I’d say there’s a chance that he’ll be ready for the start of the offseason program,” Caserio told Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast, via HoustonTexans.com’s Drew Dougherty. “I think there are still some things that he has to complete or go through. Quite frankly, it’s amazing what he’s done to this point.”
Metchie was halfway through his outpatient chemotherapy treatment as of a November game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, his teammates thought he looked ready to go on the field with them at that point, Prime Video’s Kaylee Hartung said on the broadcast.

“[Metchie] was diagnosed with leukemia just before his rookie season started,” Hartung said on the Prime Video broadcast. “He spent a month and a half in the hospital for treatment. Now, he tells me he is halfway through his outpatient chemotherapy regiment.
“Just as important to his recovery, he told me, has been getting back into a routine with his teammates. He says, ‘This is what I know. This is where I’m most comfortable.’ Dameon Pierce told me Metchie has been working out with them like he could suit up tonight.”
Last year at Alabama, Metchie was one of Bryce Young’s go-to targets as the Crimson Tide rattled off a run to the national championship. He had 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns before Houston selected him No. 44 overall in this year’s draft despite tearing his ACL.
