Indianapolis Colts announce hiring of legendary NFL wide receiver
The Indianapolis Colts have brought back a franchise icon. While NFL free agency is getting underway, the Colts have instead made a major addition to their coaching staff. On Monday, the Colts announced that Reggie Wayne is officially back with the team, now as wide receivers coach.
News originally broke that the Colts were considering Wayne in late February.
“News: The Colts are strongly considering hiring franchise great Reggie Wayne as the team’s new wide receivers coach, sources said,” The Athletic’s Zak Keefer said. “Nothing finalized, but would be a big addition to Frank Reich’s staff.”
Now, the deal is signed and official, and one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history will be roaming the sidelines in Indianapolis.
Wayne played 14 seasons with the Colts, hauling in 1,070 career receptions on 1,714 targets for 14,345 yards and 82 touchdowns. He is a six-time Pro Bowler, and was a first team All-Pro in 2010. Wayne was a second team All-Pro in 2007 and 2009.

Wayne ranks 10th all-time with 14,345 career receiving yards and 1,070 receptions. The now 43-year old could bring a sort of veteran presence to a Colts wide receiver room that is in need of major improvements.
Wayne takes over Colts receiving room that is filled with questions
This past season, Michael Pittman Jr. led the Colts with 88 receptions, 1,082 receiving yards, and six touchdown receptions. The closest competitor to Pittman was Zach Pascal, who had 38 receptions for 384 yards and three touchdowns. TY Hilton only played in 10 games, and hasn’t looked like himself in few years. He had 23 receptions for 331 yards and three touchdowns this past season.
Wide receiver is a major need for the Colts. Pittman is a solid start, but the team will undoubtedly be looking for upgrades this offseason, whether it’s through the NFL Draft or free agency. Regardless, the Colts now have an intriguing and prominent figure leading the unit, and Wayne should at the very least provide a bit of a spark for an offense that is looking for more consistency.
