INTEL: Ranking the contenders for four-star Coen Carr
Coen Carr is the No. 47 player in the On3 2023 rankings update. Over the past twelve months, the 6-foot-6 forward has used the NIBC and Nike’s EYBL Circuit to prove he is one of the country’s most explosive and high-flying players.
Last month, during Peach Jam, Carr averaged 13.2-points, 7.3-rebounds, 1.3-steals, and 2.0-blocks per game.
Shortly after Peach Jam, Carr squeezed in his final two junior year official visits, Tennessee and Michigan State. Add in Indiana and Vanderbilt, and those are the four official visits Carr has taken.
Last night, the Greenville (SC) Legacy Early College forward tweeted out he would be making a public commitment on August 9. He did not list top schools in his post.
Let’s go through the sourced intel and rank the contenders.
1. Michigan State
Michigan State brought Coen Carr on an official visit without an offer in hand. Carr left that trip to East Lansing with an offer in hand. Michigan State did a good job of showing Carr how they planned to use him and how he would fit into their system.
Doug Wojcik did a great job of building a relationship quickly here.
Michigan State’s chances: 80-percent
2. Tennessee
Tennessee was able to get Carr on a visit the Monday after Peach Jam ended. They appealed to Carr by showing him the PJ Tucker and Admiral Schofield types with which Rick Barnes has had a lot of success.
The location of Tennessee in proximity to Carr’s home in Georgia also made things interesting here.

Tennessee’s chances: 10-percent
3. Indiana/Vanderbilt
These were the first two schools that stepped up for Carr. Indiana has a rich tradition with an NBA coach. Vanderbilt is closer to home with Jerry Stackhouse, a former NBA all-star who played Carr’s position.
Both programs got Carr on campus early.
Indiana/Vanderbilt’s chances: 5-percent each
Final intel
Indiana could have locked in Carr early had they pushed, but sources close to the recruitment suggest they were up and down with their recruitment.
Michigan State and Tennessee came in later, and intel suggests they both came in strong. Michigan State offered officially while Carr was on his visit. The tradition Tom Izzo has built at the school, of winning and making tournament runs, appealed to Carr.
Sources say the Spartan staff did a good job answering Carr’s questions, which included distance questions and how they would be using and developing Carr on the floor.
On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine
I have placed my expert pick in On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) for Coen Carr to choose Michigan State. I set my pick with 75-percent confidence.
