Trevor Lawrence, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had to pay the price after the No. 3 Clemson Tigers lost to the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs, 10-3, on opening weekend.

Lawrence, a product of the Tigers’ program, where he won a national championship in 2019 and made the College Football Playoff three times, appeared to have made a bet with Jaguars wide receiver Terry Godwin. Godwin, a 2019 seventh-round pick, played college football at Georgia, and posted a video on his Instagram story of Lawrence entering the locker room dressed head-to-toe in Georgia gear.

“You look good in red and black, man. I like it,” Godwin said through his laughter, while another teammate is heard in the background chanting, “SEC! SEC!”

Lawrence through three 2021 NFL preseason games looked the part of a first-overall draft pick. He completed 31 of his 44 pass attempts, good for a completion percentage just shy of 71 percent, and threw for 323 passing yards and two touchdowns. He was officially named the Jaguars Week 1 starting quarterback on Aug. 25.

“It [felt] good,” Lawrence said after being named the starter. “We talked about our QB room, and we just have a great group, so I’m really excited for the opportunity. It doesn’t really change anything, though. We’ve still got the same task in front of us. [We’ve] got to get a lot better — individually, as a team [and] as an offense.”

In his three-year Clemson career, Lawrence completed two-thirds of his passes for 10,098 yards, 108 total touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He also had 943 yards rushing. Lawrence left Clemson as the winningest quarterback in school history, adding the 2018 national championship trophy to the program’s collection, despite it being his true freshman season.

A native of Hogansville, Georgia, Godwin played four seasons at the University of Georgia, and was a regular starter as early as his true freshman year in 2015. Through 54 games played and four seasons, Godwin notched 133 receptions for 1,788 yards, 11 touchdowns and an average yards per reception hovering just above 13 yards. He was selected seventh round with the 237th-overall pick by the Carolina Panthers but was waived during final roster cuts.

He proceeded to sign with the Jaguars practice squad, and last year he appeared in his first three NFL games. Through three career NFL games, Godwin has three receptions for 32 yards.
