Ja'Marr Chase ahead of matchup with Trevon Diggs: He’s a little hit or miss

The Dallas Cowboys host the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend and the Ja’Marr Chase–Trevon Diggs matchup will be one to watch intently. Even more so now that Chase pointed out on Friday in a video posted by Bengals reporter Mike Petraglia on Twitter that things will be feast or famine against Diggs.

Diggs led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 with 11, but also allowed more than 1,000 receiving yards when he was a primary defender. He might jump a route, but Chase thinks there’s just as good a chance to get open for a big hitter. Either way, he certainly respects Diggs and his accomplishments — even if he was being quite honest about a potential weakness.

“He’s an athlete,” Chase said of Diggs. “Great ball skills in the air. He’s super fast. He’s a little — he’s not too much on technique sound. He’s a little hit or miss. He’s either all the way on or not on at all. But he’s definitely a great athlete.”

The two have matched up before, but not since Diggs was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 and Chase was selected by the Bengals in 2021.

“Yeah I have, in college,” Chase said about playing against Diggs before.

Their most recent showdown was the epic Alabama–LSU game in 2019 where the Joe Burrow-led Tigers came to Tuscaloosa and let rip with their historic passing attack, winning 46-41, on their way to a national title.

Chase probably got the best of Diggs and the entire Alabama defense that day, hauling in six passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, including a highlight reel touchdown on the sideline over Diggs.

We’ll see who wins the latest Chase-Diggs bout when the Bengals and Cowboys — both 0-1 — get together on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. Eastern time in Dallas.
