Early in the Sunday matchup between Denver and Kansas City, Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy lost his temper and made contact with an official. The Broncos were trailing the Chiefs 27-0 and frustration boiled over for Jeudy after a route he ran saw a defender trip him as he released from the line of scrimmage.

Jeudy removed his helmet and was incredibly upset with what he felt was a no-call on a penalty — eventually bumping into an official with his chest while arguing the call. Jeudy was not penalized on the play.

Jeudy’s anger came from a crucial play that ended in an incompletion for the Broncos while already trailing by 27, where he was tripped up and went to the ground coming off the line of scrimmage. Replay showed Jeudy’s foot was stepped on by the defender as they released up the field, but officials either didn’t see the contact or ruled it incidental.

Jeudy and the Broncos offense followed up the moment with an offensive barrage for more points than they’ve scored in every game but two this season. The Broncos rallied to cut the Chiefs lead to 27-21 by the third quarter, and Jeudy was responsible for two touchdown catches personally after his outburst.

Critics of Jeudy pointed to the outburst as an action that was worthy of an ejection, as unnecessary contact with an official is punishable by an unsportsmanlike penalty or an ejection by the NFL rules. Despite the contact, the official did not throw a flag or penalize the Broncos star for his outburst — leading Chiefs fans to become upset that his touchdown production shouldn’t have been possible if he had been penalized.

Although he may not have been flagged during the game, it is entirely possible that the NFL will hand down a further punishment to Jeudy after reviewing the incident.
