Ezekiel Elliott missed Dallas’ game today versus the Chicago Bears with a sprained right knee. His absence left a void open that Tony Pollard more than filled this afternoon with 131 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the Cowboy’s 49-29 win. This isn’t the first time Pollard has showed out and continues the debate of who should be the feature back in Dallas backfield. With that said, owner Jerry Jones gave a very clear answer after today’s victory.

During media, Jones emphatically backed Elliott as the franchise’s RB1. While Pollard is great in his own right, Elliott’s skill set is something that makes him a major key for Dallas according to Jones.

“There’s no argument,” said Jones. “Zeke’s ability to punish, to deliver it, what he does for us in pass protection? And, frankly, Zeke’s ability to make big plays? We’re gonna go where Zeke goes. He’s that integral to our success this year.”

Elliott has been the starter in the backfield for the Cowboys since he arrived in 2016. His production has dropped off in recent seasons, which has opened the debate between him and Pollard. However, Elliott is still putting up solid production with 443 yards and four touchdowns through his seven games. All in all, his numbers haven’t justified a switch although his absence today allowed Pollard to shine.

Pollard has earned his reps with the Cowboys. At this rate, he may very well take his talents elsewhere after this season as a free agent. With that said, it looks even more likely as Jones continues to assert Elliott as the go-to running back for the franchise. Now, their goal is to get him back on the field as soon as possible after their upcoming bye week.
