Joe Burrow reveals his appendix ruptured, shared details of recent surgery

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow shared details about his recent surgery, stating that he ruptured his appendix. The former LSU star and national champion had an appendectomy on July 26, and spoke with the media for the first time since his surgery. He continues to recover from the surgery, and highlighted that he did not expect that his problem was so severe prior to the appendectomy.

Burrow explained that he went for his appendectomy on July 26 for what they believed was inflammation of his appendix. Once he was in for the seemingly routine procedure, they determined that it was much more severe of a problem and got to work on his ruptured appendix.
“It wasn’t normal appendicitis that you hear about,” Burrow said, via ESPN. “I didn’t really feel much. Just getting checked out and had some discomfort, so we thought we’d get it checked out. Turns out I had it. So we had to get it fixed.”
The extended hospital stay resulted in weight loss according to Burrow — although he declined to reveal how much weight was lost specifically. He was unable to return to practices right away and watched practice from on a medical cart to be with the team during his recovery. Burrow was finally cleared to return to throwing the football two weeks after his procedure.
