More updates are coming in regarding Kelvin Joseph’s potential role in a March shooting.

Thursday night, The Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken reported police want to interview Joseph regarding what happened at a club when Cameron Ray, 20, was killed during an altercation in the early morning hours March 18. As it turns out, Joseph was a passenger in the car from which the shots came, according to his attorney, Barry Sorrels.

Friday, Sorrels spoke with The Morning News, stating Joseph didn’t kill Ray.

“Kelvin Joseph did not shoot Cameron Ray,” Sorrels said. “Mr. Ray’s death is a tragedy, and Kelvin extends his deepest condolences for the family’s loss. On the night of March 17, Kelvin was unarmed and was not looking for violence. He found himself in a situation that escalated without his knowledge or consent.

“Along with condolences to the Ray family, Kelvin apologizes to the Dallas community for being anywhere near this type of incident. The investigation is ongoing, and we intend to respect the process.”

In Gehlken’s original report Thursday night, officials didn’t believe Joseph pulled the trigger. Sorrels’ statement appears to back that up, but police haven’t talked with Joseph yet.

Joseph played college football at LSU and Kentucky and went to the Cowboys as the No. 44 overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He just wrapped up his first season with the team, totaling 16 tackles as part of a staunch defensive attack under first-year defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
