Lincoln Riley shouts out Baker Mayfield following comeback winning performance with LA Rams
Baker Mayfield put together a spectacular comeback performance on Thursday Night Football for the Los Angeles Rams. Down 16-3 with 12:20 remaining, Mayfield fired some beautifully accurate throws late to lift the Rams to a 17-16 comeback victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. He completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 230 yards, while tossing in one touchdown and no interceptions. On Thursday night after the game, Mayfield’s old head coach while he played for the Oklahoma Sooners, current USC head coach Lincoln Riley, decided to give him a shout out.
Baker Mayfield caught absolute fire in the fourth quarter
Mayfield completed 15 of his 20 pass attempts in the fourth quarter–the second most completions in any quarter during his entire NFL career. He picked the best time to get hot, when the Rams needed it the most.
Not only that, Thursday Night Football was his first start with his new team since being released from the Carolina Panthers. On the game-winning touchdown drive, Mayfield led the Rams on an 8 play, 98-yard drive in just 1:35. With nine seconds remaining in the game, he connected with Van Jefferson on an absolute strike. Mayfield planted his foot at the 32-yard line, and he fired a beautifully accurate ball to Van Jefferson, who was blanketed by a Raiders defender at the goal line, for the touchdown.
“Great stuff @bakermayfield,” Riley tweeted. “Neighbors?”
While the tweet was just a friendly tweet between the head coach and his former Heisman Trophy winner, many Sooner fans saw it as an unintentional troll. If you can read the comments, plenty of people weren’t happy about the tweet. It seemed like simply a friendly tweet between a coach and one of his all-time favorite pupils.

The pair will always remember their time together at Oklahoma fondly. And why wouldn’t they? After all, they dominated on the field while being paired together with the Sooners. They both ended up making each other a lot of money in the long run.
Their most magical season came in 2017, when Baker Mayfield threw for 4,340 passing yards, while tossing in 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions. The pair guided the Sooners to a 12-1 overall record and a berth in the College Football Playoff that year.
Next up for Mayfield and the Rams, they’ll face the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. That one is set for Monday, December 19th. Kickoff is slated for 8:15 PM EST.
