LOOK: Green Bay Packers to debut retro uniforms against Washington Football Team
The Green Bay Packers are throwing it back roughly 70 years in a home contest against the Washington Football Team Sunday, as the franchise will don its brand-new 1950s throwback uniforms.
The 1950s Classic Uniform combination is one the Packers have not yet worn in-game, and they first announced on Aug. 19 that the all-green combination would debut in Week 7.
The 1950s Classic Uniform is inspired by the Green Bay Packers’ uniforms from 1950-1953, which was the second time in franchise history they wore green and gold, nearly 20 years after the colorway was introduced — and taken out of rotation shortly thereafter — in the mid-to-late 1930s. The Packers’ new uniforms are all green, from the pants to the jerseys, fit with gold lettering and gold stripes on the shoulders. The green pants are fitted with gold stripes, too, and the Packers will wear green socks to match. The outfit is completed with an all-gold helmet.

“The 1950s were one of the most interesting times in our organization’s rich history, creating the bridge between two of the greatest eras in pro football, Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy said in a press release. “With the NFL growing rapidly, this time period set the stage for the construction of Lambeau Field and for the team’s success in the 1960s and beyond. We hope our fans enjoy celebrating our history with this new alternate uniform.”
Hopefully, for Packers fans, the team won’t rekindle any of the struggle or misfortune from the 1950s while rocking the retro uniforms, as the throwback is an homage to an uncharacteristically poor time in Packers franchise history. Legendary head coach Curly Lambeau, who led the Packers from 1921 to 1949, left the organization just before the 1950s, and had just a 5-19 records in his last two seasons at the helm. Gene Ronzani took over and coached the Packers for all four seasons in which it wore these all-green outfits, going just 14-31-1 before resigning late in the 1953 season.
