LOOK: Green Bay Packers special teams makes mistake on final play of game
The Green Bay Packers just suffered a stunning loss to the San Francisco 49ers at snowy Lambeau Field on Saturday night. A massive reason the Packers will not be moving onto the NFC Championship game was their atrocious special teams play.
The horrible play on special teams reared its head again when 49ers’ kicker Robbie Gould setup to kick the game-winning 45-yard field goal attempt. He nailed the walk-off kick, which won the game for the 49ers 13-10, but perhaps just as notable for the Packers was the number of players on the field in the deciding moment.
Green Bay only had ten men on the field for the most important play of the game.
Check out the tweet from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Their current special teams coach, Maurice Drayton, is likely to catch some serious heat after this game and deservedly so. Simply put, it’s the biggest game of the season and the biggest moment of the season. His unit couldn’t line up properly with the right amount of players. That’s mind-blowing. Packers fans have every right to be livid.
They’ve had the worst special teams unit in the league all season long, and unfortunately for the Packers, it caught up to them when it mattered the most, playoff time.
It’d be surprising if Drayton remains on the Packers’ staff after that debacle. Not only did Green Bay choke again in the playoffs, but they wasted yet another year with one of the greatest quarterback-wide receiver duos in the history of the game, Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams.
After the game, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur talked about having 10 players on the field for the final field goal, saying, “That’s unacceptable. That’s on me.”

Another uncertain off-season for the Green Bay Packers
Not only does the loss sting for Packers’ fans, but it’s going to sting even more if Aaron Rodgers packs his bags up and heads elsewhere. The future Hall-of-Fame signal-caller is once again heading into an off-season full of mystery, intrigue, and drama, which is exactly the way he likes it.
Whether he wants to admit it or not, Rodgers loves the attention from the national media and he truly can’t get enough. He commented after the game, “I think this thing is definitely gonna look different in Green Bay moving forward.”
As last off-season taught the world, predicting the future of the Packers and Aaron Rodgers isn’t easy at all.
It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out in Green Bay. Much like the Cowboys, the Packers had an incredible, incredible season. It’s going to be very tough for everyone associated with the franchise to truly appreciate how good of a season they had, because of the disastrous finish Saturday night. That loss to the 49ers will sting and sting for quite some time.
