WATCH: Tyrann Mathieu introduced as member of New Orleans Saints
Former LSU star defensive back Tyrann Mathieu has officially been introduced as the newest member of the New Orleans Saints. Mathieu participated in a press conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss coming back to his hometown.
“It is most definitely a dream,” Mathieu said about playing for the Saints. “To have an opportunity to represent this team to be a part of this locker room; I’ve always been a fan of the way the Saints play football. Just to have that opportunity means a lot to me. More than anything I just want to know take advantage of it and make the most of it.”
Mathieu spent the last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he won Super Bowl LIV. Last season, Mathieu accumulated 60 solo tackles, three forced fumbles, three interceptions and one sack and a touchdown to help lead the Chiefs’ defensive effort in 2021.
His efforts have given him a a three-year, $33 million deal with the Saints, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That contract is roughly $9 million less than his original contract with the Chiefs in 2019.
Out of high school, Mathieu was a four-star recruit and the No. 6 recruit from the state of Louisiana in the Class of 2010, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He went on to become a superstar at LSU before he slipped to the Arizona Cardinals as the No. 69 overall pick in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In his nine-year NFL career, he has 26 interceptions, including three pick-sixes and six fumble recoveries.
Since joining the league in 2013, the former LSU star has compiled 609 total tackles (524 solo), 76 pass deflections, 26 interceptions, 10 sacks, six fumble recoveries and three pick-sixes during his nine season NFL career in Arizona, the Houston Texans, Chiefs and now his hometown Saints.
He’s now set to bring his Honey Badger mentality back to Louisiana after coming off an impressive stretch with one of the best franchises in the NFL today and will try to replace the production left by safety Marcus Williams in free agency and safety Malcolm Jenkins‘ retirement.
