Matt Corral reveals key meeting on first day of NFL Scouting Combine

Former Ole Miss star quarterback Matt Corral isn’t throwing in front of teams at the NFL Scouting Combine but the potential first-rounder is still doing interviews this week. Corral revealed on Wednesday morning that he met with the Pittsburgh Steelers already.

Following the retirement of Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger, the organization could go for a quarterback in the first round. Combine performances by other quarterbacks could impact how they view the banged-up dual-threat QB.

Corral began throwing again two weeks ago, according to Tom Pelissero, and he hopes to be full-go for Ole Miss’s Pro Day on March 23.

“Projected as a high pick, Corral only played in the Sugar Bowl because he’s so competitive, and it’s killing him not to participate here,” Pelissero wrote. “But it was high ankle sprain with a 6- to 8-week recovery. I’m told he’s ahead of schedule — just not enough time to prepare to work out here.”

Corral threw for 3,300 yards in each of the last two seasons. In 2020, he threw for 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. This past season, Corral threw 20 touchdowns and cut down his interception number to five. He also emerged as a dangerous runner, rushing for 614 yards and 11 more touchdowns.

Steelers hold pick No. 20 in 2022 NFL Draft

Despite Pittsburgh’s clear interest in the former Rebel, NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper sees another quarterback heading to the Iron City.

“[The Steelers are] picking at 20,” Kiper said Tuesday on ESPN’s Get Up. “Will Kenny Pickett from Pitt be there? I don’t think so. Malik Willis [from] Liberty? Could be there. Could fall in their lap at 20. They might not have to move up to get him. Matt Corral [out of] Ole Miss could certainly be there.

“You’ve got to trust your rankings, Greeny. That’s what you go back to, and I have Pickett right now at 19, Willis at 20, Corral at 27. So you think about top-10 rich for me, 20 is about where you start thinking about a quarterback in this draft.”
