Miami safety Amari Carter signs free agent contract following 2022 NFL Draft

Former Miami Hurricanes safety Amari Carter was not selected in the 2022 NFL Draft this weekend, but he has still gotten an opportunity to show what he has at the NFL level. According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Carter has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Chicago Bears.

“University of Miami safety Amari Carter joining the Chicago Bears on an undrafted deal, per a league source,” Wilson tweeted. “Carter, who has his own charitable foundation (http://survivefoundation.com) that helps homeless people in South Florida, was a team captain for the @MiamiHurricanes.”

Wilson totaled 173 tackles in his five-year collegiate career. This past season, he had 45 tackles with three tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, one pass defended, and one interception. In addition to the 173 tackles in his career at Miami, Carter also racked up 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, six passes defended, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

When he first arrived at Miami, Carter was a three-star recruit, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. He was rated as a national top 500 recruit in the 2017 class, in addition to being a top 50 safety in the class.

Carter is looking to carry his success at Miami to the Bears

With the Bears, Carter will have to fight to prove himself and make the roster. Chicago selected Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker with the No. 48 overall pick in the second round on Friday, and the Bears also took Cal safety Elijah Hicks in the seventh round.

The Bears have veteran starter Eddie Jackson in place as one starter at safety, with Brisker expected to step in at the other safety spot. The secondary could use some depth, so Carter will hope to prove that he belongs during rookie minicamp later this summer, and eventually in the preseason.
