Saquon Barkley was hoping to be back in-time for the New York Giants matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. When he was originally injured against the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants avoided putting Barkley on injured reserve — hoping for him to be healthy for Monday’s showdown.

Evidently, the Giants’ wishes didn’t come true. Today, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan provided an update on the status of Barkley for against the Chiefs.

“It’s official: running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (knee) are out,” tweeted Raanan. “Wide receivers Kadarius Toney (ankle) and Sterling Shepard (hamstring) are questionable.”

Unfortunately, the former Penn State star won’t be returning to the field this week. However, the Giants are hopeful Barkley will be back for the team’s next game — November 7th against the Las Vegas Raiders.

In addition to Barkley, the Giants big-time free agent acquisition in wide receiver Kenny Golladay will miss another week. The Giants believed the avoided disaster with Golladay’s knee, but he’s about to miss his third straight game as well.

Luckily, it seems the Giants will get back wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Sterling Shepard. Both players were out last week against the Carolina Panthers, propelling wide receivers John Ross and Dante Pettis into bigger roles.

Moreover, Toney has looked electric when he’s been on the field. His performance against the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys turned heads, and he looked to be on the way to another prior to his injury against the Los Angeles Rams.

More on Saquon Barkley

Prior to his unfortunate injury, Barkley had accumulated 325 total yards and three scores on 68 total touches. One of those scores was extra important — a game-winning touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in overtime.

In Barkley’s stead, backup running back Devontae Booker has carried the load. Additionally, fullback Elijhaa Penny has also gotten some burn. Last weekend against the Rams, the duo combined for 20 touches, 85 total yards and a touchdown.

The NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018, Barkley looked to be on his way to being the NFL’s premier running back. However, injuries have piled up and changed the trajectory of his career. Now, the Giants sit at 1-5, desperate for the help of the former No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

As Saquon Barkley looks to return, he’ll be looking to return to help his team — he’s a gamer. Additionally, it could be an audition for next season, as his time in New York could be running out.
