NFL Free Agency: Jacoby Brissett signs one-year deal with Washington Commanders

A piece of the NFL’s quarterback carousel has made his free agency decision, as Jacoby Brissett has signed with the Washington Commanders. NFL insider Aaron Wilson reports the two sides agreed to a one-year deal.

Brissett began his NFL career in 2016, after he was selected with the No. 91 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots out of NC State. He started two games in New England as a rookie, and was then traded to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the 2017 season. Brissett spent four years in total with the Colts, starting 30 games and amassing an 11-19 record as a starter.

Brissett hit free agency before the 2021 season, where he signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins. He started five games in Miami, leading the Dolphins to a 2-3 record. He also appeared in six other games with the Dolphins.

Brissett hit free agency again prior to the 2022 campaign, where he joined the Cleveland Browns. In Cleveland, Brissett opened the season as the Browns’ starting quarterback as Deshaun Watson was suspended for the first portion of the year. Brissett had a solid year in Cleveland, going 4-7 in 11 starts and throwing for 2,608 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Overall, Brissett is 18-30 as a starting quarterback in the NFL, but he’s proven to be a valuable backup. Across seven years in the league, he has completed 61.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 10,350 yards with 48 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Brissett also has 896 career rushing yards with 15 touchdowns.

More on the 2023 NFL offseason, free agency

The NFL 2023 calendar is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET on March 15 when contracts running through 2022 will officially run out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams will have a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 7. Beginning March 13 through March 15 teams will be allowed a legal negotiation with players who are set to become unrestricted free agents.

In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marks the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 21 marks the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets while April 26 marks the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets. 722 players are slated to become free agents in 2023.
