The 2022 NFL Draft was filled with several eye-popping trades on days one and two. However, one of the biggest trades everyone was waiting for, the Cleveland Browns trading away disgruntled quarterback Baker Mayfield, never came to fruition. And NFL insider Ian Rapoport has an idea for why the Browns failed to trade Mayfield.

Before the draft, news circled that the Carolina Panthers would be interested in acquiring Mayfield from Cleveland. But fast forward to the Monday after the draft, and the former Heisman-winning trophy quarterback still does not have a new home. And according to Rapoport, money might have been at the root of the problem for the failed trade.

“That was a somewhat significant storyline, through the second day of the draft,” said Rapoport. “…In the end, the Browns and the Panthers could not agree to terms on a trade for Baker Mayfield. And it seemed like money, the salary was really the hold up here. How much money would each side take on? How much would the Browns agree to pay of a fully guaranteed salary? So, the Panthers did what we kind of maybe thought there was a chance they would do, they traded back in the third round they took Matt Corral and as of right now… Baker Mayfield is still on the Browns, which means he hasn’t been traded, which opens the door to many many other options including Baker Mayfield going to training camp and continuing to be with the Browns.”

With Mayfield scheduled to make just under $19 million for next season, teams have been hesitant to take on that bill. As of now, it looks like the Browns are going to have to pay a hefty price tag for a quarterback that is likely to never play for them again.

Matt Corral states his intentions with Carolina Panthers following 2022 NFL Draft

Selecting Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral with the No. 94 overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers are setting up a quarterback battle for the 2022 season. However, they still have former New York Jet Sam Darnold, who has received some votes of confidence this offseason from the Panthers staff.

Reporters asked the newest Panthers quarterback his intentions for year one. They also wanted to know how he plans to approach his first NFL quarterback battle.

“My approach is just to be the best I can be each and every day, get one percent better every day,” Corral said. “My competitive nature is obviously going to want me to be the starter and I’m going to do everything in my power to do that, I’m just going to put my best foot forward and again, just let God take control.”

The Panthers traded the No. 137 overall pick and a future third-rounder to the New England Patriots for the No. 94 pick.

Corral was a former four-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. Corral was fifth amongst quarterbacks in the 2018 recruiting class.
