The Dallas Cowboys are ponying up the big bucks to keep defensive end Randy Gregory in DFW. Prior to free agency, the Cowboys are planning to re-sign Gregory to a five-year, $70 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The large figure reportedly includes $28 million in guaranteed money for the former second-round draft pick out of Nebraska.

After a rocky start to his career that included multiple suspensions, Gregory’s put together a couple of solid seasons for Jerry Jones’ squad. He really broke out this season as an edge rusher, posting six sacks, four tackles for a loss, and 17 quarterback hits. Alongside DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons, Gregory was a part of a revamped pass rush under defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

The former Nebraska star signed a one-year extension for the 2021 season that net him $2.1 million. Now, he gets the deal he’s waited for since entering the league in 2015.

To start the offseason, Gregory had surgery on his left knee. It bothered him throughout the year but didn’t keep him off the field.

In his NFL career, Gregory has totaled 85 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 52 quarterback hits, 16.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two pass breakups. The Cowboys selected Gregory with the 60th overall pick in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

In September of 2016, the Cowboys DE received a suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. He was banned for ten games. Less than four months after his return, the NFL suspended Gregory again, for the third time in his career. Due to it being his third suspension, Gregory’s suspension was for a full year.
