Former Ole Miss star edge rusher Sam Williams is continuing his football career with the Dallas Cowboys after being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He let Dallas know why the Cowboys front office was correct in their decision of drafting the former Rebel.

“I’m relentless … I love the game,” Williams said. “I’ve studied the game; and they’re gonna get a player that wants to play, wants to win, wants to do his job, wants to go over and beyond. I’m just ready. I can talk about it, but I’m just ready to show it.”

Williams was a former four-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus rankings. His path to Ole Miss came through the JUCO level as one of the highest rated junior college prospects in 2019. He received first-team JUCO All-American honors at Northeast Mississippi Community College with 17.5 sacks — a talent that carried over to the SEC level.

In 2019 he led Ole Miss with six sacks and 9.5 tackles for a loss, as well as recording an interception and forced fumble. He was suspended for part of the 2020 season after being charged with sexual battery, although the charges would be dropped soon after. He returned to the field and led the Rebels again with four sacks. His best season came last year, as Williams tallied 12.5 sacks — a school record — with 16 tackles for a loss and forcing four fumbles. He left Ole Miss with third-team AP All-American and first-team All-SEC honors.

Concerns arose over his arrest and subsequent felony charge of sexual battery, which suspended him from the Rebels 2020 season. Williams commented on the matter shortly after his selection, denying he partook in any wrongdoing regarding the case.

Williams, 23, is a father to a young son who he credited with showing him the right path and making his draft dreams come true. The Cowboy wants to put his past behind him and focus on giving his son a better life as Williams begins his career in Dallas.

“I never had a dad. I’ll start off by saying that,” Williams said. “I had father figures in my life, but there’s nobody like your biological dad. When I had my son, I made a promise to him and myself that he’ll never go through what I went through.”
