After their playoff loss on Saturday, the Green Bay Packers received an update on the injury that running back AJ Dillon suffered during the game. Dillon injured his ribs on a special teams play in the second half of their game against the San Francisco 49ers, and it was revealed on Sunday that he suffered a fractured rib.

“As if the loss wasn’t tough enough, source said Packers running back AJ Dillon suffered a fractured rib last night against the 49ers. It would have been a battle to be back for the NFC Title game,” stated NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

After injuring his chest while on a special teams play, cameras caught Dillon stand up on his own power and wince at the pain he felt. The cold weather at Lambeau Field likely didn’t help matters as the injured Dillon came off the field for further evaluation.

Shortly after his injury, the Fox Sports broadcast of the game announced that he was designated as “questionable” to return to the game with a chest injury.

The Packers also lost safety Darnell Savage to injury during the game, after Savage suffered a back injury. The Packers were already thin on both sides of the ball with injuries to key players, and entered the game with two safeties inactive due to injury.

Savage and Dillon were two of the bright young stars for the Packers this season and are part of why the Packers earned the top seed in the NFC.

Unfortunately, the Packers went on to lose for the third-straight year in the conference championship as the 49ers won with a game-winning field goal. The Packers will have to wait at least another year now for their first Super Bowl appearance since 2010, especially with the future of quarterback Aaron Rodgers unknown going into next year.

Green Bay and San Francisco met earlier in the season during Week 3. That game also came down to the final moments and was decided by a game-winning field goal in favor of the Packers. San Francisco got their revenge win on the much bigger stage, advancing to the conference championship.
