Packers waive wide receiver Sammy Watkins ahead of MNF game

The Green Bay Packers have had trouble finding answers at wide receiver this season after losing superstar Davante Adams this past offseason. One of the guys brought in to help replace Adams, Sammy Watkins, is now being waived, according to Tom Pelissero.

Pelissero tweeted Monday afternoon, ahead of Green Bay’s night game against the Rams, that the team released Watkins:

“The #Packers are releasing WR Sammy Watkins, per sources. Watkins will go on waivers.”

The veteran wideout has shined at several stops throughout his career, but steadily declined each year over the last few. Baltimore gave him a shot last year and didn’t have a ton of success. Then, Green Bay gave him a whirl but that team has been a mess for most of the year. Regardless to say, Watkins’ time with the Packers didn’t go so swell, either.

Watkins to join a contender?

Now, the 29-year-old hits the waiver market, where teams can claim him for a pretty cheap deal, considering his past pedigree. Pelissero added in a later tweet the contract details for Watkins if/when a team claims him off waivers. Here was that info:

“Any team claiming Sammy Watkins would take the rest of his one-year contract, including just $186,667 in base salary plus $19,411.67 for each game he’s active the rest of the regular season.”

Whew, that’s cheap for a former 1,000-yard receiver. A max cap hit of just $250,000 for a veteran than could conceivably contribute. Surely one of the contenders picks him up, or any playoff team that needs receiver help or has one go down here in the next few weeks.

Good chance Watkins is back in uniform for some of these playoff games coming up. The former Clemson playmaker has yet to hit 30 years old and should still have plenty left in the tank. The NFL ain’t seen the last of this ol’ Tiger yet.
