Patrick Mahomes explains 'Snow Globe' trick play in Kansas City Chiefs offense

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes explained the origin of the team’s “Snow Globe” trick play used against the Raiders on Saturday. The Chiefs pulled out an extremely unusual trick play in the red zone against Las Vegas where the entire offense spun around in a circle before breaking the huddle and rushing to the line of scrimmage.

According to Mahomes, the play was drawn up around Christmas by the players — explaining the festive nickname for it and how it ended up in their playbook.

“Yeah we enjoy it,” said Mahomes after the game about the creativity of coach Andy Reid’s offense. “We draw up all these plays all the time and Coach Reid lets us have the rein to kind of help do some stuff and add our own flair. And we got that touchdown but they called it back. We’ll have to come up with another one for the playoffs.

“We call it ‘Snow Globe’ because we drew it up during right before Christmas. And we actually practiced it as like kind of messing around, and Coach Reid was like ‘I like that’. And so we put it in the game plan and it worked, but we had a holding penalty so we didn’t get a touchdown. So we have to think of something else cool.”

The explanation given by Mahomes shines a light on how NFL players frequently come up with things from a completely different point of view from their coaches — as well as giving a glimpse into how Reid’s relationship with his offensive leaders works.
