Pittsburgh Steelers announce signing former second-round pick Anthony Miller to one-year deal

Former Memphis star and Chicago Bears second-round pick Anthony Miller is staying in Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old wide receiver spent three years in Chicago before splitting time with Houston and Pittsburgh during the 2021 season. Then, the Steelers opted to keep him through last offseason on a reserve contract. But just before the start of this season, Miller was placed on the injury reserve due to a shoulder issue and was never activated to the actual roster.

Despite the injury setbacks, Pittsburgh still liked what they saw from Miller, apparently. Because on Tuesday, roughly a week after the end of their season, the Steelers signed Miller to a one-year deal for the 2023 season. Here was the news via the Steelers’ team Twitter account:

“We have signed WR Anthony Miller to a one-year contract.”

Miller was a two-time 1,400-yard receiver in his junior and senior seasons with the Tigers and Chicago snatched him up with the 51st overall pick in the 2018 draft. After a few fairly successful seasons with the Bears, Miller was released and landed in Houston…where he didn’t stay for long before heading to Pittsburgh.

While with the Houston Texans, he appeared in just two games and didn’t make much of an impact, recording five catches for 23 yards a touchdown. Unfortunately, he found himself on the chopping block and was released soon after being signed. When then-Houston Texans head coach David Culley was asked about the receiver’s dismissal, he pointed to the return of receiver Danny Amendola. With Amendola returning it didn’t make sense to the Texans to keep Miller, who they use in the slot, on the roster if he was not going to be active weekly.

For his career, the Miller has primarily been used as a slot receiver, and during that time the 5-foot-11 receiver has a total of 139 catches for 1,587 yards and 12 touchdowns. In his years in Chicago, he also added in nine rushes for 37 yards and one touchdown.
