Tragedy struck in the NFL on Saturday morning when it was reported that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins had passed away after getting hit by a car in South Florida.

Following the tragic news on the death of Haskins, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin issued a heartfelt statement.

“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin said. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”

Haskins was training in south Florida with some of his Steelers teammates prior to his death.

Haskins made an impression on Tomlin while with the Steelers

At Ohio State in 2018, Haskins starred as the leader of the Buckeyes offense. He threw for nearly 5,000 yards with 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Following his impressive season, Haskins was drafted with the 15th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders.

During his second year in Washington, Haskins was waived and he then found his way to the Steelers. Haskins hasn’t played any regular season games in Pittsburgh, but he undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the team, especially Tomlin, during his time there.

Haskins was set to be part of a Steelers quarterback room that also includes Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and possibly another quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Following the tragic news of Haskins’ death, multiple former Ohio State players and coaches took to Twitter to share their reactions. Michael Thomas, Brian Hartline, Parris Campbell, Evan Turner, Gene Smith, and CJ Stroud are among the many individuals to share their reactions.
