The Pittsburgh Steelers have claimed linebacker Jamir Jones off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars and released linebacker Derrek Tuszka, the team announced Thursday.

Tuszka was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. At North Dakota State, he was a three-year starter from 2017 to 2019 and was a part of four FCS National Championship squads. He’ll be available immediately for teams to claim on waivers.

Jones, on the other hand, played for three different teams last season including a three-game stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also played for the Los Angeles Rams, and then the Jacksonville Jaguars where he totaled 10 tackles on the year. He’ll look to remain with the Steelers a bit longer this time around with the season rearing its head in less than two weeks.

More Steelers roster moves

Ahead of the NFL’s mandatory deadline to reduce rosters to 53 men, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a series of roster moves. That meant that the team released several players who had been on the roster bubble to this point in the preseason. These moves were announced via the team’s website

Among the players who the Steelers cut were Henry MondeauxBuddy Johnson, and Carlos Davis. The latter two players had been drafted in 2021.

In total, 22 different players were released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Notably, that includes defensive back Carlins Platel, who was injured on Sunday and had surgery less than 24 hours before being cut. An undrafted free agent, Platel played at Assumption College before transferring to South Carolina

One move worth noting was Pittsburgh’s decision to trade for Malik Reed. The outside linebacker had spent the first three seasons of his career with the Denver Broncos. The Steelers, meanwhile, are sending a late-round draft pick back as compensation.

The Steelers open their season against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 11, 2022. That game will occur at Paycor Stadium, the home of the Bengals, which was formerly known as Paul Brown Stadium. The Steelers also updated their stadium name this offseason, going from Heinz Field to Acrisure Stadium.
