Report: Pittsburgh Steelers reach two-year deal with quarterback
The Pittsburgh Steelers have added intrigue to their quarterback competition, as the franchise has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky on a two-year deal, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
The Steelers are still looking to replace future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the organization has expressed confidence in Mason Rudolph. Rudolph, a former third-round pick out of Oklahoma State, has been with the franchise since 2018; this past season, Rudolph threw for 277 yards, one touchdown and one interception, holding a 60.3 percent completion rate in one start and one late-game appearance. Now, Trubisky has been added to the mix in Pittsburgh.
Trubisky, 27, spent last season as a backup to Josh Allen on the Buffalo Bills. A previous report suggested that the New York Giants were looking into the possibility of signing Trubisky, who would then compete with Daniel Jones for the starting gig — provided that the report had validity, Trubisky could very well be coming into the Steelers to compete for the starting job, too.
Trubisky, a former four-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus, had a successful college career at UNC and earned third-team All-ACC honors in 2016, prompting the Chicago Bears to select him with the second-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Trubisky never quite lived up to expectations in four seasons with the Bears.

Trubisky started all four years in Chicago, and he amassed 10,609 passing yards, completing 64 percent of his passes, while throwing 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. His best performance came in 2018, when he completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 3,223 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions, a season that saw Trubisky named to the 2019 Pro Bowl.
Chicago traded four draft picks, including the No. 3-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, to move up one spot and pick Trubisky, who never matriculated into the All-Pro-level quarterback that the Bears had expected. As such, Chicago decided to move on, ultimately selecting Justin Fields out of Ohio State, and Trubisky landed in Buffalo as a backup in 2021.
