Randy Gregory reveals challenge to Trevon Diggs before game

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs surprised the Carolina Panthers by grabbing two interceptions in the win on Sunday afternoon. The second-year defensive back wasn’t surprising himself, however.

As it turns out, Diggs predicted a two-pick day when challenged by Cowboys star defensive end Randy Gregory.

“Diggs is funny because I told him before the game, ‘I need one (interception),’” Gregory said post-game. “He said, ‘I’m going to get you two.’ So, he got that first one, and I thought we were good. He did his job. Then he got that second one.”

Diggs’ first interception of the day — his fourth of the season — came early in the third quarter, when he ballhawked Darnold’s read of the pocket and stepped right in front of the receiver’s route for a relatively easy pickoff.

His second interception, on the other hand, was far from a typical interception. Diggs made an incredible leap over the Panthers’ wide receiver, diving around his outstretched arms for a full-extension interception.

Diggs, a 2020 second-round pick out of Alabama, was named September’s NFC Defensive Player of the Month just last week. He notched three interceptions and six defended passes — both totals leading the league — in the Cowboys’ first three games.

Trevon Diggs is constantly one-upping himself, with the help of teammates and family. Last week, Aaiden Diggs, Trevon’s young son, asked his pops for a pick-six.

In coverage of his former Alabama teammate DeVonta Smith, Diggs picked off former Alabama teammate in Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and returned it for a touchdown.

“He was like, ‘I want you to get an interception and a touchdown,’” Trevon Diggs said during his postgame press conference. “I kept my promise.”

Picking off Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold twice, Diggs etched his name in Cowboys history.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound corner is the first Cowboy since 1961 (Don Bishop) with an interception in each of the first 4 games of a season, and he’s the first Cowboy since 1968 (Chuck Howley) with five interceptions in the team’s first four games of a season.

Last week, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dished up a compliment to cornerback Diggs in typical Jones fashion.

“A receiver faking it as a D-back,” Jones said via the Dallas Morning News. “He plays that ball and makes those special plays. And obviously, he’s not only got talent, but by the way, he’s worked to get in position to make those plays. He’s a difference-maker.”

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was asked after the game if Diggs is the top defensive back in the league.

“For sure,” Prescott said. “Turn on the tape … It’s easy to see.”

Diggs has plenty more opportunities to prove his quarterback right, and he wants opposing offenses to keep giving them to him.

“I don’t want them to stop throwing (at me),’ Diggs said. “Keep throwing. I want more (interceptions).”
