Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas made a strange decision before a Lions field goal to end the half, interfering with their snap. With time running out in the first half, the Lions were setting up to attempt a field goal when Douglas saw his sideline calling a timeout to “ice” the kicker before his attempt.

Instead of waiting for the officials to blow the play dead like normal, Douglas walked down the line of scrimmage and attempted to take the ball away from the center — possibly denying them a chance to kick a “practice” kick after the timeout. A Detroit lineman retaliated by shoving Douglas in the weird moment, and after the two shared words Douglas struck him in his facemask and earned a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.

The Lions got to kick the field goal from closer because of the penalty, and entered the locker room trailing 9-6 as a result. As the replay showed a closer look at the strange situation, commentator Cris Collinsworth joked that he had never seen that happen on the field before in his career.

While the idea of stopping a free “practice” kick made might be a good one in general, the casual walk down the line of scrimmage before a timeout was called drew attention to his decision as he was visibly over the line while walking up to the ball. Had the Lions noticed, the play could have resulted in a free play for the offense instead of just letting the officials end the play like normal.
