It has been a tough season for the Chicago Bears. After a 3-2 start to the season, Chicago has lost six of its last seven games, falling to 4-8 on the season. With the clear struggles, the future of Bears head coach Matt Nagy is in question. If the Bears do make a coaching change, it might not be the only significant change coming to the top of the organization.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Bears have had discussions with coaching agent Trace Armstrong for a “top management position” with the organization. Armstrong is a former Bears player, and he is reportedly very interested in joining the Bears’ front office.

The Bears’ ownership is reportedly considering wholesale changes to both the coaching staff and front office. If that becomes true, Armstrong could be in line to take over in an attempt to help turn things around for his former NFL team.

“Armstrong, a former Bears player who is held in very high regard by the McCaskey family and longtime team president Ted Phillips, is very interested in the potential of helping steward his former franchise into better days, and ownership is at least willing to consider the notion of restructuring the hierarchy of the franchise, sources said, as it embarks on getting a new stadium constructed in Arlington,” La Canfora said.

“Sources said in this scenario, if the sides agreed to it, Armstrong would oversee football operations with the coach and GM reporting to him; Bears coach Matt Nagy is currently one of Armstrong’s clients, but at this point staving off a coaching change in Chicago is remote at best, with a heavy expectation around the league that Nagy is let go.”

Ryan Day would be an intriguing candidate if the Bears looked for a new coach

If Armstrong does take a prominent role in the Bears’ front office, he could look to bring Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day with him. Armstrong is Day’s agent and a big fan, and the Buckeyes head coach could be a hot target around NFL coaching circles.

Day took over for Urban Meyer at Ohio State and has been extremely successful ever since. He has experience in the NFL, coaching quarterbacks for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

Another connection for Day and the Bears is Chicago’s rookie quarterback Justin Fields. Fields was selected by the Bears in the first round of the NFL Draft in the offseason, and Day coached him at Ohio State. The future of the organization largely hinges on Fields, so pairing him with his former collegiate head coach could make a lot of sense.
