Report: Los Angeles Chargers make huge decision on Mike Williams' future
Don’t expect Mike Williams to leave the Los Angeles Chargers anytime soon.
Williams is set to sign a three-year, $60 million extension with the Chargers, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday. The Chargers could’ve used the franchise tag on him, but managed to get a deal done before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Tuesday.
Williams had a strong year in 2021 with 76 receptions for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns for Los Angeles. He emerged as a prime target for quarterback Justin Herbert in his fifth season in the NFL after playing college ball at Clemson.
Los Angeles went 9-8 in 2021 and finished third in the AFC West. The Chargers nearly made the playoffs, but fell to the Las Vegas Raiders in the last game of the regular season to just miss out.
News of Williams’ deal came out shortly after another huge move in the AFC West involving one of the Chargers’ rivals. The Denver Broncos have a new quarterback — and they made a big splash.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network had details as to what Denver will be sending Seattle’s way. A lot of draft picks will be heading to the Pacific Northwest, with players potentially being involved as well.
“The Seahawks and Broncos have agreed in principle on a trade sending nine-time Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson to Denver for a massive haul, including multiple first-round draft picks, plus additional picks and players, per sources,” Pelissero said.
Denver quarterback Drew Lock is part of the deal as well, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. He will be heading up to Seattle, entering the final season of his rookie contract. Tight end Noah Fant is also part of the deal, along with two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Seattle is also sending a fifth-round pick to Denver as part of the blockbuster deal.
