Nashville’s Lipscomb Academy was handed a two-year postseason ban last week by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) due to a reported recruiting violation. Now, Lipscomb has parted ways with head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Mawae, per Matt Fortuna of The Inside Zone.

This season, Mawae replaced Trent Dilfer, who was the head coach of the program for four seasons. Dilfer left last November to take the head coaching role at UAB.

Mawae previously spent two seasons as a coach for the Indianapolis Colts. He was hired as the assistant offensive line coach in 2021 and held the position until December. Klayton Adams accepted a coaching job with Stanford during the month, leaving the tight end coaching spot open for Mawae to slide into the role.

Before Indianapolis, Mawae was an offensive analyst for Arizona State for three seasons and an assistant offensive line coach for the Bears in 2016.

Lipscomb had already been a part of recruiting headlines this fall, as 2025 quarterback Deuce Knight transferred from the school to Lucedale (Miss.) George County after playing just three games at the beginning of the season. Knight is the No. 45 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle and has since committed to Notre Dame.

“It was a family deal for him,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin Mawae told The Tennessean’s Tyler Palmateer. “He did everything we wanted him to do. It had nothing to do with football, it had everything to do with him wanting to be with his family.”

Back in February, all of Lipscomb’s athletic programs were placed on a one-year probation and handed a $1,000 fine due to a social media post that broke a TSSAA recruiting rule.
