Report: Pittsburgh Steelers make interesting move with former Ohio State quarterback
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation continues to unfold. Monday, they tendered a contract to one of them — even after agreeing to sign one in free agency.
Pittsburgh tendered Dwayne Haskins a contract worth $2.54 million, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. He’s now the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Mason Rudolph and the newly signed Mitchell Trubisky.
The Washington Commanders drafted Haskins as the No. 15 overall pick out of Ohio State in 2019. He played in 16 games, including 13 starts, in two seasons with Washington and totaled 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns while completing 60.1% of his passes. Haskins didn’t play at all for the Steelers in 2021.
The decision to tender Haskins a contract came after the Steelers agreed to a deal with Trubisky, the 2017 No. 2 overall pick. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Pittsburgh is planning for Trubisky to become the new starter and replace Ben Roethlisberger, who retired after this past season.
The Steelers have the No. 20 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and mock drafts listed former Liberty quarterback Malik Willis as a potential target. After signing Trubisky and tendering Haskins, that could be something to watch as the draft approaches.

Report: Pittsburgh Steelers reach two-year deal with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky
The Pittsburgh Steelers have added intrigue to their quarterback competition, as the franchise has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky on a two-year deal, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
The Steelers are still looking to replace future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the organization has expressed confidence in Mason Rudolph. Rudolph, a former third-round pick out of Oklahoma State, has been with the franchise since 2018. This past season, Rudolph completed 60.3% of his passes for 277 yards, a touchdown and an interception in two appearances. Now, Trubisky has been added to the mix in Pittsburgh.
Trubisky, 27, spent last season as a backup to Josh Allen on the Buffalo Bills. A previous report suggested that the New York Giants were looking into the possibility of signing Trubisky, who would then compete with Daniel Jones for the starting gig — provided that the report had validity, Trubisky could very well be coming into the Steelers to compete for the starting job, too.
Trubisky, a former four-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus, had a successful college career at UNC and earned third-team All-ACC honors in 2016, prompting the Chicago Bears to select him with the second-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Trubisky never quite lived up to expectations in four seasons with the Bears.
