Ryan Grubb assesses Alabama quarterback battle ahead of A-Day

Alabama enters its final week of spring practice, and first-year offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb told ESPN there hasn’t been any separation in the Crimson Tide’s quarterback battle.
“I think we’ve got three really, really good quarterbacks, and I mean that,” Grubb told ESPN’s Chris Low on Monday. “I don’t think anybody has separated. They’re all playing good, but they’re not playing great yet. You’re looking for the guy that’s going to be consistent, that can show up the same and make the same plays all the time.”
Redshirt junior Ty Simpson, redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell are competing for Alabama’s starting job behind center, which was left vacant by Jalen Milroe.
Grubb told Low that Simpson (158 reps) and Mack (162) have received most of the team work throughout spring camp, as the Crimson Tide coaching staff has charted every single throw. In Friday’s scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Simpson and Mack received all of the reps with the first-team offense, per sources, while Russell was with the twos and threes.

In an ideal world, Grubb told ESPN, he would like to know his quarterback entering the summer. But as Alabama gets set for its final week of spring, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
“But I wasn’t expecting that either. I wasn’t going into this thinking, ‘Oh, I bet by practice 11 this will be done,’” Grubb said. “I didn’t think that at all, and I didn’t think that because I thought all three of them were good players.
“… Yes, you would have loved for this guy to have grabbed it and run with it, but we’re just not there yet.”
Alabama will return to the practice field on Tuesday, April 8, for spring workout No. 12.
