LOOK: Sam Acho responds to Texas Hall of Honor selection

Texas announced this year’s class for the Hall of Honor, and Sam Acho is part of that group. He took to Twitter with a lengthy response in appreciation for the honor.

Acho is part of a star-studded group going into the Hall of Honor this year, including NBA star Kevin Durant. All told, 11 Texas legends will be inducted on Sept. 16, UT announced Wednesday.

After the news came out, Acho put out a statement issuing a multitude of thank you’s.

“I couldn’t be more honored to be getting inducted into the @UTAustin Hall of Honor,” Acho wrote. “I genuinely didn’t believe it was real. Going to Texas was a game changer for me … I never expected to arrive here, and I guess I’m still on that journey. So I thank everyone who’s been a part of mine and who has let me be a part of theirs. Until next time, Hook ’em.”

Acho starred as a defensive end for the Longhorns from 2007-10, totaling 127 tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss and 21.0 sacks during his time in Austin. He also was a first team All-American in 2010 and won the 2010 William V. Campbell Trophy as part of a huge senior year.

Acho became a fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2011 NFL Draft and played in the league until 2019 with the Cardinals, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a stint on the Buffalo Bills practice squad. In 110 career games — including 57 starts — he totaled 241 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 18.0 sacks after switching to linebacker.

After his retirement from the NFL, he joined ESPN as an analyst. He, along with Durant and the other nominees, will be inducted the day before the Longhorns take on UTSA. During that game, they’ll be recognized and receive a “special salute,” according to the announcement.
