WATCH: Scottie Scheffler nearly hits a hole-in-one at WGC Match Play to advance to semis

Former Texas Longhorn Scottie Scheffler continues to display that when he’s on, he’s the most unbeatable player in all of golf. On Saturday at the WGC Match Play Championships in Austin, Texas, Scheffler was locked into a close match with Jason Day in their quarterfinal matchup. Like he’s done so often the past few years, Scheffler demonstrated freon coursing through his veins with two holes remaining. On a par three, Scheffler striped a beautiful iron shot that landed on the green and came within inches of going in the hole. The shot sealed the victory for him over Jason Day in the quarterfinals, putting him up two holes with one hole remaining.

Day was 3-up at one point in the match on Saturday, but Scheffler was able to battle his way back to advance to the semifinals. Day was 3-up through six holes, but the former Texas Longhorn was able to tie the match after carding a birdie on No. 12.

Scheffler has got the game and temperament to fit any course in the world and he’s proven that in a big way the past few years. He’s already racked up six wins on the PGA Tour and he’s placed inside the top ten in every major (US Open: T2, 2022), (British Open: T8, 2021), (PGA Championship: T4, 2020), and (The Masters: Win, 2022).

The former Texas Longhorn has two wins alone in the past two months, one of them coming at TPC Sawgrass at The Player’s Championship–one of the most prestigious events on tour. The great form from Scheffler couldn’t come at a better time–The Masters is right around the corner, and he happens to be the defending champion there. He won last year’s version with a winning score of 10-under par, three strokes ahead of Rory McIlroy.

With the win today over Jason Day, he advances to the semifinals of the WGC Match Play Championships to face Sam Burns on Sunday. The other semifinal matchup will be Rory McIlroy vs. Cameron Young, one of the most gifted young stars in the game today. He’s only been on the PGA Tour since the 2021-2022 season and the former Wake Forest star has already finished top five in two majors: 2022 PGA Championship (T2), and the 2022 British Open (second place). In 2022, Young won PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors, winning 94 percent of the votes.

It should be an exciting finish on Sunday and the WGC Match Play Championship is one of the best tournaments of the year.
